Short Bio

Dr. C. Nataraj is the Mr. and Mrs. Robert F. Moritz, Sr., Endowed Professor in Engineered Systems at Villanova University. He has a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, and M.S. and Ph.D. in Engineering Science from Arizona State University. He is currently the Chairman of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Villanova University. Dr. Nataraj was also the founding Director of the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics & Control (CENDAC) in the College Of Engineering.

Over thirty three years, Dr. Nataraj has taught over 22 courses and has worked on various research problems in nonlinear dynamic systems with applications to machinery diagnostics, rotor dynamics, vibration, control, electromagnetic bearings, mobile robotics, unmanned vehicles and biomedical diagnostics. He has published many papers and book chapters, and is the author of an undergraduate textbook on vibrations and an upcoming research monograph on nonlinear rotor dynamics. He has received over $8 million in research funding from Office of Naval Research, DARPA, National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health and many companies. Dr. Nataraj serves on the editorial board of several international journals.

Teaching

I am fortunate to be at Villanova where teaching is valued and appreciated, and is not treated like a chore that interferes with research! I have taught many classes, but have recently settled down to teaching three graduate courses in a four-semester sequence. Read more...

Administration Overview
  • I helped found and led the Center for Nonlinear Dynamics & Control from 2002 to 2007. CENDAC, as we called it, is thriving as an interdisciplinary research center.
  • I am currently the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. We have a great collegial energetic department dedicated to teaching and scholarship; we happen to have four open faculty positions. Check out the link for the announcement.
